How do philosophers stay in such great shape?

This clip should provide the answer…

The Name Game

So we’re going to have to start thinking about baby names. Not right now (it’s still early…), but soon. I thought it would be fun to get our readers’ thoughts on this matter. To get the ball rolling, I’ll share the couple of ideas we’ve received from our nephew Owen: Charlie for a boy, and Tyrone for a girl. (We’re not entirely sure where he’s even heard the name `Tyrone’. let alone how he came up with it for a baby girl.) We thought Tyrone was a funny (in a out-of-the-blue sort of way) suggestion, so Barb and I have taken to periodically referring to the embryo as Tyrone. Anyway, throw your suggestions our way. We can’t promise we’ll take them to heart, but we thought this would be a fun way to get y’all talking, and see what we come up with…

(P.S. Barb doesn’t know that I’m posting this. She’ll find out soon enough I’m sure, but I’m not doing this at her behest. So, it this is dorky, the blame rests entirely with me.)

New video chat capabilities

Do any of our readers out there have some kind of video chat capabilities, like iChat for Mac or something similar? We just got hooked up with iChat, which means we can video conference with those of you who have the capability. If you so, send us an email so we can exchange screennames. Then we’ll be hooked up.

Attention, please…

I have an announcement to make:

Yes, you’re seeing clearly. We’re expecting a baby! We don’t have many details at this point. We do know that the due date will be some time in April (not sure of the exact date) and that I am 5-7 weeks along. My first OB/GYN appointment is Sept. 22. We’ll find out more then. So, in addition to projects #1 and #2, it looks like I’ll also be busy with Project #3: Project Mother!

New Projects

Project #1: Project Discover

Many of you have been wondering what I have been up to and this is it. My project was to find a kitchen table, 4 chairs, and a desk for $150 and I accomplished my task for $0!! We came up with the $150 budget because we knew we could get those things for that price from KMart. But I wasn’t so nuts on the look of the KMart stuff, so I decided to find stuff on my own. One afternoon, I drove around town, not knowing where to go. On the first street I turned down, I saw a desk at the side of the road. It’s pretty big and I knew I couldn’t move it myself, so a neighbour lady came out and helped me move it to the side of the driveway, where we draped a tablecloth on it so nobody would see it and we could go back and pick it up later when Dave got home. On my way back to the apartment, pleased with my desk find, I thought `What are the chances that there would be a table and 4 chairs in good condition on the side of the road for free…’ Well, to my surprise, on the last street I turned down, there were 2 tables and 7 chairs sitting on the side of the road! WOW! So we went and picked up 1 table and 4 chairs later that day as well. Mission accomplished!

Project #2: Project Recover

The chairs were in rough shape when we got them. Here are the before pics:

So I went down to Ohio last week to visit my Aunt Eleanor, who needed some help with a project of her own, and in turn, she helped me re-upholster the chairs. Here are the after pics:

So, now you’ve seen some of what I’ve been doing the last few weeks.

Ann Arbor Photo Tour

Alright, for those itchin’ to get a visual feel for our new city, here are a few pics of the area. All of them are of the downtown area(s) and some nearby our place (which is close to downtown). We’re not yet ready to post pictures of our apartment, so you’ll have to wait for those.

We’ve really enjoyed the last few weeks here. Other than the two hellishly hot days when we moved, the weather has been beautiful, so we’ve been able to get out for walks and explore a bit. There is much to do here–trying to take it all in at once can be overwhelming. So we’re just taking it slowly.

Anyway, here are the photos.

This is a picture from our side (north) of the river looking toward the downtown area, which is just on the other side of the bridge.

Here’s a quaint little street immediately on the south side of the bridge. The street leads to the farmer’s market and Kerrytown shopping area. Just up the street from here is somewhat of a local treasure — Zingerman’s Deli. Quite the experience!

This is looking south down Main St., one of the 4 distinct downtown areas. It might be tough to tell from this picture, but, in addition to being lined with trees, the street is also lined with sidewalk cafes and patios. Lots going on here!

This is looking east from Main down Liberty St., the other main downtown strip. Down at the other end of Liberty are two very cool movie theatres — the Michigan and State. We went to see a move at the Michigan last weekend — very cool!

This is Angell Hall, the building where the philosophy dept resides. It’s situated on State St., which is one of the other downtown areas. (For more on Ann Arbor’s downtown areas, click here.)

This is looking south down State St. (toward Angell Hall). You can see the State Theater on the left hand side. This is also lined with sidewalk cafes, etc.

This is looking from Angell Hall north on State St. As you can probably tell from the pic, the campus is quite urban (even though Ann Arbor is not that big of a city). The campus buildings are integrated into the surrounding community, rather than being set off from the surrounding area on a secluded piece of land.

Anyway, there’s a first taste. We’ll post more as we take them!

I love new computers!

Our new MacBook just arrived today! I’m lovin’ it so far! I’ve spent most of the day transferring files from our old laptop to the new one, as well as installing various software items I need.

What the MacBook’s arrival means for this space is more pictures and (hopefully) more posting! Once the transition is completed over the next few days, we’ll put up some pics we’ve been meaning to post.

All’s Well in A2

Just a quick note to say that the move went well (although the temperature was a little too high for our liking — try 100F!). All out stuff is in our apartment and we are more or less unpacked and settled. We still need to pick up a few items, e.g. a kitchen table and chairs and a desk, and we still have a few boxes to unpack, but the place is starting to look like someone lives in it.

No pictures to show yet. Those will come in the next few weeks. We just ordered our new computer, which should come in a week or so. We’ll probabaly wait until it arrives to post some pics. (Our current one bogs down too frequently to upload pics with any reliability!)

We did get a piece of fantastic new today: not only will the University be covering my health insurance; they’ll be covering Barb’s as well! This ends up being a big savings for us and gives our tight budget a little breathing room!

Anyway, we’ll have more to say in the coming days as we explore our surroundings. Stay tuned.
