I had heard that pregnant women have several new personality traits. Some are Extreme Hunger. “I NEED TO EAT NOW!” then you have the Mood Swings “Oh I Love you, I love everything” 2 minutes later “I don’t like you, I don’t like anything” Now I’m not speaking from experience…. yet.
But recently I have experienced the Crying at Anything. Again, I know “But Barb you cry at anything already!” Well the other day Dave was out watching the Wolverines crush #2 Notre Dame, and I didn’t go (laundry day). Anyway I decided that I would listen to it on the radio because we don’t have TV. During half time there was a commercial for the “Best Show on Earth, Come to Michigan, Admission is free and Seats are available everywhere” The guys voice was soothing and yet sounded like “the movie voice”. Well his description of this “Show” (the changing colour of the leaves) brought me to tears, and before I realized it my eyes were puffy, my nose was runny. All and all just a pathetic scene.
What makes this even more pathetic, was when Dave came home, I retold the story and it brought me to tears again!! Expalin that! Dave just looked at me, shook his head and said “You really are pregnant!”
Now I know I am not the only one who has experienced this, talking to some friends this week, they admitted to having similar experiences (but with TV commercials!)
Well yesterday was my first ultrasound experience. I was a little nervous, to say the least. Even before the doctor came in to the examining room I had tears welling up in my eyes! I know I know “But Barb you cry at anything!” and while that is true I think this was a little different. I was thinking that they would preform the ultrasound and tell me “I know that you want to be pregnant soooo bad, but you have actually talked yourself into believing your pregnant! And your not. We’re sorry”
Just Kidding, being a little melodramatic!
Anyway that didn’t happen, but what did happen was totally amazing! We got to see “Little Tyrone” kicking and punching like something in there was attacking him/her! (When s/he comes out they’ll say “you shoulda seen the other guy!”) And we will be proud parents!
Dave was pretty excited too and I think I maybe saw a tear well up in his eye! This makes it seem more real. When I thought about being pregnant I actually thought that it would make me sick, that something is growing inside me! Yuck! But that’s not the case. It’s pretty amazing that God made it that way. The safest place for it to be is in my belly! How awesome. I am just amazed.
Any way, here is a picture for those who want to see. If you don’t and think it’s wierd just look away.
No, we haven’t given up on blogging, we’re just (a) really busy (or, I am really busy), and (b) don’t have anything to say. Nothing much has happened in the last few weeks. Perhaps we’ll have a chance to say a little more this weekend sometime.
By the way, both the Aggies and Wolverines have started the season 3-0. The Ags had a bit of a scare last week against Army, but we came through. The Wolverines thrashed #2 Notre Dame on national tv and dashed the Heisman hopes of Brady Quinn. Good stuff!
Last Thursday, Dad and Les came to visit us for 2 days. We enjoyed a few meals together and spent a lot of time walking around downtown AA and shopping, eating chocolates and ice cream. They left on Saturday morning after a breakfast of french toast and coffee. No sooner did they leave than my Aunt Eleanor, Aunt Joyce and Grandma arrived from Ohio! We had lunch together and went for a walk around the river, looked at some of my scrapbooks, and talked about the baby a little. After they left, I had a two hour nap!
On Sunday, we went to New Life Church to check it out. It was obvious that their target audience was undergrads; the music was quite loud (but well done); they played one song that remined us of Avril Lavigne’s song Sk8er Boi!
Thursday, I had my first appointment with the OB/GYN. Basically, they just took background information and gave me some reading materials, ordered some bloodwork, etc. My next appointment will be with the doctor on the 22 of Sept. At this appointment, I’ll get an ultrasound done! Dave is going to come with me! Yippee! I’ll keep y’all posted.
Well, the first week of life as a Ph.D. student is now over. Classes went well, but the pace for this year will definitely be more like my first year as a MA student than the second (read: busy!). I’m registered in 3 classes: the Proseminar, which is supposed to be the equivalent of 2 grad classes, Ethical Analysis, and a French reading course. The Proseminar is a class that consists of all and only grad students. It’s supposed to be a `grad school boot camp’ (as described the the prof this week), meant to catch us up to speed with things we should have read by now as well as provide an intense bonding experience among first year students. Should be interesting. Ethical Analysis is an introductory ethics course taught be a preeminent moral philosopher (who is actually a really good teacher in addition to being a good philosopher). The French reading course shouldn’t be much of a problem given my background in French. Actually, I still read at a decent level, so passing this course will enable me to get my language requirement out of the way quickly and painlessly.
I’m also fortunate enough to be free of teaching duties this term, which should give me the time and space to get my feet under me and really dig into my classes. Maybe I’ll even find the time to do some of my own research! (I doubt it though; I think the point of the Prosem is to make sure this doesn’t happen!)
By the way, I let the first week of the college football season pass by without so much as a whisper. So, if you didn’t already know, both my teams won on opening day. Michigan beat Vanderbilt 27-7, but the offence looked shaky for most of the first 3 quarters. Hopefully those kinks get worked out soon; Notre Dame comes to town next week! More importantly, my Aggies beat up on The Citadel 35-3. Yes, I know, Citadel is a D-1AA, and a lower tier one at that. But, nonetheless, the offense got into a bit of a rhythm in the first half and the defense seemed much improved. We’ll see if we can keep up the improvement over the next few weeks. We’ll need to; our first real test comes in 4 weeks when Texas Tech comes to Kyle Field. But before that, we get Army in San Antonio (televised on ESPN2).
