Bridging the Language Gap

Translation from one language to another is a fairly sophisticated art (as I’m learning in my French reading class). But this translator has taken the task to an entirely different level!

Varsity’s Horns Are Sawed Off!!!

Did any of you see the game? It was unbelievable!! The Aggies actually beat the Horns… in Austin, no less! Here are some of the interesting facts about the game:

It was the Longhorns first conference loss at home since 1999
The win broke a 6-year streak of losing to the Longhorns
The 11th-ranked Horns are the highest-ranked team A&M has beat in the Coach Fran era
The Longhorns entered the game as the best rushing defence (fewest rushing yards allowed) at 40 ypg; A&M rushed for 244 yards, 91 of those on the first possession
The Longhorns entered the game as the 3rd ranked scoring offence at 39 ppg; A&M held them to 7 points… on their home turf!

This is easily the biggest win for the Aggies since Coach Fran took over in 2003. Needless to say, I’m a little excited. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come!

Weekend Visitors

My parents came here for a visit this past weekend. We didn’t do much out of the ordinary, but we had a great time relaxing and visiting for a few days. Nothing too intense. We went out to eat for most meals. Saturday morning we hung out Starbucks while Barb worked.

The highlight (for Dad and I) was spending most of Saturday in a sports bar–the first 4 hours securing seats for the big game; the next 4 hours we spent watching the game. It turned out to be a great game with a less than great result for the Wolverines. Nonetheless, it was cool to be among die-hard Wolverines to experience all the emotion associated with the rivalry. Barb and Mom went shopping while we held our seats and then they went home at halftime for a nap and to watch the rest of the game from our couch.

These Are Ph.D. Students at a Top Philosophy Dept?

These are my fellow first-years. Based on the pictures alone, it may be hard to take them seriously.

It’s a good thing Michigan didn’t see these until after agreeing to let us in…

Breathing Easy…

…for now. I’ve just finished a pretty intense two weeks, so I can slow the pace down for the next couple of days.

I’ve also just mailed in my SSHRC Fellowship application, which was nice to finally get out of my hair. I applied for the fellowship last year; but after seeing a winning application, I understand why mine wasn’t so successful. I think application is much stronger. We’re really hoping to get this, especially now with the baby coming. The fellowship would put a little extra money in our pockets and it would free me up from teaching so that I can get ahead in completing my degree requirements.

Killing Time

So I found this website (via our friend Manuela) that allegedly takes a photo of you and then tells you which celebrities you look like. Here are my results:

I’ve been told that I look like a lot of people (Wayne Gretzky and Tony Hawk are probably the most prominent ones), but I’ve never been told that I look like any of these people. I must say, I’m a little puzzled about the Tom Brokaw comparison, and a little more than puzzled about the John Candy bit…

What’s going on here?

Ok, folks, there’s snow on the ground. Not only that; there’s been snow on the ground for more than 10 hours. I know… snow happens. In fact, snow happened very often for the first 26 years of my life. That doesn’t mean that I like it. And, considering that I was comfortably wearing shorts and a t-shirt everyday at this time last year, this snow business is now doubly disappointing.

I think Texas winters spoiled me.
